「日本美しの森 お薦め国有林」
「日本美しの森 お薦め国有林」其の四 林野庁では、今般、「日本美しの森（にっぽんうつくしのもり） お薦め国有林」を全国で93箇所選定しましたので、お知らせします。
概要
林野庁では、平成28年3月30日に「明日の日本を支える観光ビジョン構想会議」（議長：内閣総理大臣）により策定された同ビジョンを踏まえ、平成29年度より国有林の「レクリエーションの森」※を核とした山村地域における観光地域づくりの取組を推進することとしています。 今般、優れた自然景観を有するなど、観光資源としての潜在的魅力が認識されるレクリエーションの森を「日本美しの森 お薦め国有林」とし、有識者の意見を踏まえ、全国で93箇所選定いたしましたので、お知らせします。これらのレクリエーションの森においては、重点的な情報発信、環境整備などを通じその魅力をさらに磨き上げていく方針であり、地域振興のために一層活用されることが期待されます。
※国有林の中でも、特に優れた自然景観を有し、森林浴や自然観察、野外スポーツ等に適した森林を「レクリエーションの森」に設定し、広く国民に提供しています。平成28年4月現在、全国に1,055箇所あります。
レクリエーションの森
林野庁では、全国の国有林内に、美しい森林景観や豊かな自然に親しんでいただけるよう「レクリエーションの森」を整備しています。
平成28年４月現在、全国に1,055箇所のレクリエーションの森があります。
このサイトでは、「レクリエーションの森」のうち、国内外の旅行者の方々に訪れて欲しいレクリエーションの森を、少しずつご紹介していくこととしています。
第一弾は下記の５箇所の紹介です。（今回の屋久島自然休養林は、５箇所になります）
Recreation Forests
The Forestry Agency has established ‘Recreation Forests’ within national forests across Japan to provide the people with the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery and rich wilderness in the forest. As of April 2016, there are 1,055 Recreation Forests designated all over the country. This website aims to provide you with a series of information on ‘Recreation Forests’ that we strongly (or proudly) recommend to both domestic and foreign tourists. As our first selection, we would like to introduce to you the following five Recreation Forests.
屋久島自然休養林
屋久島は、島の中央に九州最高峰の宮之浦岳（1,936ｍ）をはじめ1,500ｍ以上の山々が連なり、豊富な降水量により渓谷や滝の多い急峻な地形が形成され、樹齢数千年に及ぶヤクスギをはじめ、多くの固有種や絶滅のおそれのある動植物などの生物相を有し、亜熱帯から亜寒帯に及ぶ植生の垂直分布が見られるなど、特異な生態系と優れた自然景観を有し、1993年には世界自然遺産に登録されています。
島の面積のおよそ２／３（島の森林面積の85％）が国有林で、ヤクスギを含む森林を比較的容易に鑑賞できる「荒川地区」と「白谷地区」の２箇所が自然休養林に指定されています。（屋久島には、このほか、「大川の滝風景林」「千尋の滝風景林」「田代ヶ浜風景林」のレクリエーションの森があります。）
このうち荒川地区（通称：ヤクスギランド）は、島の南東部の標高1,000～1,300ｍに位置し、ヤクスギ、モミ、ツガ、ヒメシャラ、ヤマグルマの巨木を含む原生林と、藩政時代のヤクスギの切り株、試し切りの跡等が見られ、人と森林の歴史的な関わりを学べる場所となっています。
この地区には、周遊コース（それぞれの所要時間が30分（ふれあいの径コース）、50分（いにしえの森コース）、80分（つつじ河原コース）及び150分（やくすぎの森コース）の４コース）が大小整備されており、それぞれの体力に応じてヤクスギを含め、屋久島ならではの貴重な自然を堪能することができます。
また、150分コースの蛇紋杉（倒木）地点からは、約2.7ｋｍで途中屋久杉が林立する幻想的な森、「天文の森」を経由し、高さ40mの天柱石がそびえる太忠岳(1497m)に向かう登山道の一部も兼ねています。
一方、白谷地区（通称：白谷雲水峡）は、島の北東部の標高600～1,000ｍに位置し、ヤクスギと照葉樹天然林と一面を覆う地衣蘇苔植物、その中を流れる白谷川の清流と、谷に重なり合った花崗岩の巨石からなる渓谷美を有している場所となっています。また、辻峠から登った太鼓岩からは、宮之浦岳をはじめとする奥岳と小杉谷を臨む大パノラマを楽しめ、特に春はヤマザクラの花が谷一面を覆う眺望は絶景の一言に尽きます。
この地区には、所要時間が１時間～４時間程度となる弥生杉コース、奉行杉コース、太鼓岩コースの３歩道コースが整備され、推定樹齢3000年の弥生杉も見られます。
Yakushima Recreation Forest
Yakushima Island features mountains over 1,500 meters high, including Mt. Miyanoura (1,936 m) at its center, the highest peak in Kyushu region, with steep terrain such as numerous valleys and waterfalls formed by precipitation. The island is a habitat of Yaku-sugi – Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) trees of several thousand years old- and many other indigenous species and endangered flora and fauna. The island boasts its unique ecosystem and superior natural landscape, where vertical distribution of vegetation from subtropical to boreal zones can be observed. This area has been registered as a World Natural Heritage site since 1993.
National forests cover around two-thirds of the island area (85% of the forested area of the island). Two areas have been designated as Recreation Forest: Arakawa and Shiratani, home to Yaku-sugi and other forests. (There are three other recreation forests in Yakushima Island i.e., Oko no Taki (Oko waterfall), Senpiro no Taki (Senpiro waterfall) and Tashirogahama (Tashiro shore)).
The Arakawa area (commonly known as “Yakusugi Land”) is located in the south-east of the island, at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,300 m. The primeval forest there includes giant Yaku-sugi trees, firs((Abies firma）Momi in Japanese), Japanese hemlock trees ((Tsuga sieboldii)Tsuga), tree species such as tall stewartia ((stewartia monadelpha) Himeshara, a camellia relative) and wheel tree ((trochodendron aralioides) Yamaguruma), and also contains Yaku-sugi stumps left after felling and trees with remnants of trial sawing to examine timber quality in selecting trees for felling during the feudal government period (around 1600-1800), all of these providing the opportunity to learn the historical relationship between the people and forest in the island.
The Arakawa area offers four loop courses for walk: 30-minute short course (Fureai no Michi), 50- minute ancient forest course (Inishie no Mori), 80-minute course passing by the riverbed with azalea trees (Tsutsujigawara), and 150-minute Yaku-sugi forest course (Yaku-sugi no Mori). These four courses allow visitors to choose the best course according to their physical strengths and enjoy the precious natural environment unique to Yakushima Island, including Yaku-sugi,
From the site of the fallen tree called Jamon-sugi (with snake-shaped branches), which is situated along the 150-minute course, another course leads to Mt. Tachu (1,497 m), through a fantastic scenery of Yaku-sugi trees standing densely (Tenbun no Mori ) around 2.7 km away from the starting point of the course. Moreover, the summit is home to a pillar rock standing as high as 40 meters.
On the other hand, the Shiratani area (commonly known as Shiratani Unsuikyo), is located in the north-east at an altitude of 600 to 1,000 m. Yaku-sugi and natural laurel (or evergreen broad-leaved) forests grow, while lichen and bryophyte species cover the land surface. The clear stream of Shiratani River running through the area and the layers of giant granite rocks accentuates the beauty of the valley. Climbing from Taiko-iwa (rock) to Tsuji-toge (pass) provides a large panoramic view of Mt. Miyanoura and other mountains (Oku-dake), and the Kosugitani area. The view in spring in particular, when wild cherry blossoms (Prunus jamasakura Siebold ex Koidz.) blanket the entire valley, is breathtaking. Three walking courses are available in the area, taking one to four hours to complete: Yayoi-sugi course, Bugyo-sugi course and Taiko-iwa course. The Yayoi-sugi, around 3,000 years old, can be observed from these courses.

屋久島の滝
大川の滝
大川の滝（おおこのたき）は、屋久島の南西部ににある滝で、日本の滝百選に選定されています。落差は88m。鹿児島県道78号線の近くにあり海岸からも比較的近く、堆積岩が熱変成してできたホルンフェルスの岩盤を流れ落ちています。滝の近くには日本名水百選に選定されている大川湧水がある。
千尋の滝
千尋の滝（せんぴろのたき）は、屋久島に南部にある滝で、多数の滝がある屋久島でも良く知られた滝である。
屋久島中央部に水源を持つ鯛ノ川にある落差60mの滝である。屋久島南東部のモッチョム岳（標高940m）東側の斜面に広がる250m
×300mの巨大な花崗岩の岩盤に面しており、その岩盤の大きさが千尋、すなわち千人の人間が手を結んだくらい大きいという例えから名付けられています。
滝の南側の高台が展望台になっており、車で容易に訪れることが出来ることから、屋久島を代表する観光スポットとして知られています。
龍神の滝
龍神の滝（りゅうじんのたき）は、屋久島の南部にある滝で、落差30mで、千尋の滝とトローキの滝との中間に位置しています。
蛇之口滝
蛇之口滝（じゃのくちのたき）は、屋久島の南部にある滝で、大川の滝、千尋の滝と並び屋久島で最大級の滝です。落差は約30mで、滝の上部に50m長さ100mの一枚岩が続いています。滝壺から上に行く道はありませんが、尾之間歩道を淀川方面に上がっていくと、滝の上部を眺める場所があります。

今後について
この「日本美しの森 お薦め国有林」については、今後3年かけて多言語による標識類の設置やホームページの整備等の情報発信や、修景伐採、施設整備等の環境整備を行い、多くの方に日本の美しい森林景観を味わっていただけるよう、地域の方々の協力のもと、取り組んでいくこととしています。
初年度の29年度は、下記資料（計20箇所）の「代表例」の欄に記載された箇所から情報発信、環境整備を行います。
また、今年度、「『日本美しの森 お薦め国有林』フォトコンテスト」を開催することなども検討しています。
